South Carolina Breastfeeding Action Committee

The mission of the South Carolina Breastfeeding Action Committee is to coordinate statewide efforts that publicize the need for legislation that will protect, support and promote breastfeeding in South Carolina.

South Carolina is now one of 41 states THAT CURRENTLY HAVE legislation in effect regarding breastfeeding.

In our continuing efforts, the SCBAC believes that promoting breastfeeding as normal and natural from the beginning is the best way to build a society who cherishes and supports the breastfeeding relationship. Thus, we believe our next legislative focus to be a K-12 breastfeeding curriculum similar to that offered in New York and Wisconsin now.

Now a law in South Carolina, Act 269 was initially introduced as H 4347 and sponsored by Representative Chip Limehouse III:
The new law states - "The General Assembly finds that breastfeeding, if possible, is an important and basic act of nurturing which should be encouraged in the interest of maternal and child health. A woman may breastfeed her child in any location where the mother and her child are authorized to be. Breastfeeding a child in a location where the mother is authorized to be must not be considered indecent exposure."
Governor Mark Sanford signed Act 269 on May 2nd, 2006.
