South Carolina Breastfeeding Action Committee Page is currently under construction |

Last updated November 11, 2008 The
mission of the South Carolina Breastfeeding Action Committee is to coordinate statewide
efforts that publicize the need for legislation that will protect, support and promote
breastfeeding in South Carolina.
South Carolina is now one of 47 states THAT CURRENTLY HAVE legislation in effect
regarding breastfeeding.
In our continuing efforts, the SCBAC believes that promoting
breastfeeding as normal and natural in all settings is an absolute necessity. Thus, our current initiative involves promoting breastfeeding in the workplace and acting toward legislation to protect nursing/pumping mothers at their place of employment. Our mission... ~ To support breastfeeding/pumping women in the workplace, which decreases business costs for employers.
~ To help mothers maintain lactation, which helps build a highly skilled, capable workforce of women. ~ To foster a favorable climate for employers and their employees by pumping at work. ~ To improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by mothers providing the gold standard of infant feeding, breastfeeding.

Now a law in South Carolina, Act 269 of 2006 was initially introduced as H 4347 and sponsored
by
Representative Chip Limehouse III:
The new law states - "The General Assembly finds that breastfeeding, if possible, is an important and basic act
of nurturing which should be encouraged in the interest of maternal and child health. A woman may
breastfeed her child in any location where the mother and her child are authorized to be. Breastfeeding a
child in a location where the mother is authorized to be must not be considered indecent exposure."
Governor Mark Sanford signed Act 269 on May 2nd, 2006.
How H 4347 became law through the legislative process.
